Title – “Prefix Party”

Subject - Language Arts/ Prefixes

Grade Level – 2nd
Objective - Students will learn how to identify a prefix within a word using different technology sources.

Materials:

-- Individual Laptops
-- Online Dictionaries
-- Puzzle from Puzzlemaker.com via the Internet and a computer with printer
-- Smart board Pens
-- CD-ROM Software
Goals:

-- The students will gain the ability to analyze and breakdown unknown vocabulary words using clues provided by prefixes.

-- The students will expand their own vocabularies by using prefix awareness as a tool.

-- The students will gain confidence in their own vocabulary skills by having fun.

Warm-up: Using your smart board pens, come to the board one by one and underline the word that has a prefix.
Example: jungle mean stopping improper

  1. Habit win love nonstop
  2. Ready weather bicycle storm
  3. Incomplete winter heavy sight
  4. Mom blank clarity disagree
  5. Happy sad unhappy mad

Activities:
  1. Complete a worksheet, using what you know about prefixes to make new words from a selection of prefixes.

  1. The students will engage in a fun and educational activity. Through the use of puzzlemaker.com, the students have a crossword puzzle that challenges them to apply the prefix knowledge they just obtained. The students will use communication and dictionary skills in their groups and vocabulary skills on their own.
Note: Anticipated difficulties
-- The students may have difficulty finding all of the prefixes in the dictionaries, so they are able to use online dictionaries.
-- Some students who are unfamiliar with crossword puzzles may have difficulty with the directions.
Practice: Students will be allowed to use their school issued laptop, to play practice prefix games to help them master the skill of prefixes.
Assessment:

  • The students will be evaluated orally when providing definitions to prefixes.
  • The students will receive a grade on their crossword puzzle handout.
  • They will also eventually be tested on prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
Closure:
Students will generate a fun story in which they demonstrate their understanding of prefixes. This paper will be graded by the teacher. All papers will be displayed for students to enjoy and to reinforce concepts presented about prefixes and their role in bringing to live oral and written communication.
Follow-Up

  • For homework, the students will be asked to write 10 sentences using at least one prefix in each sentence. Students will be able to come in the next day and write their sentences on the overhead projector for their classmates.
